Linked arson attacks target two Catholic Churches in Westmeath

Country: Ireland

Date of incident: March 6, 2026

Two Catholic churches in County Westmeath were deliberately set on fire over the weekend. Both incidents caused damage to the main entrances and are being treated by authorities as deliberate arsons attacks, which seem to be linked.

The Gardaí continue to investigate separate arson attacks against two Catholic churches in County Westmeath, Ireland, over the weekend. The first attack occurred around 2 a.m. on Friday at St. James Church in Kilbeggan, where cloths were placed on the main door, doused with diesel, and set alight.

A few hours later, a similar fire was started at the main door of St. Michael’s Church in Castletown, Geoghegan, approximately 10 km away. Both incidents appear to be linked, with Gardaí treating them as deliberate arson attacks. Smoke caused some damage inside the church, but fortunately, no one was injured.
