Cross Taken from Neuburg Church

Country: Germany

Date of incident: March 9, 2026

An altar cross was stolen from a church in Neuburg an der Donau. The removal of a central liturgical object from the altar highlights the religious significance of the theft, which goes beyond its material value.

The incident occurred on 11 March 2026 at the St. Augustin Church, where unknown perpetrators stole a so-called altar cross directly from the altar. According to police, the theft took place between 09:00 and 18:00.

The stolen cross was estimated to have a material value of approximately €300. However, reports emphasised that its symbolic and religious significance was considerably greater. As a liturgical object placed on the altar, the cross holds central importance in Christian worship, and its targeted removal indicates an act affecting the religious character of the space.

On the same day, a separate theft occurred at the Hofkirche, where a donation box was broken into and approximately €40 was stolen. This additional incident points to multiple offences affecting churches in the area within a short timeframe.

Police have opened an investigation and are appealing for witnesses. No suspects have been identified so far. It remains unclear whether the act was connected to other incidents.
