Multiple churches in Belfort targeted with vandalism and break-ins
During the night of 14 to 15 March, Sainte-Croix Church in Chèvremont was vandalised, with doors forced open, consecrated hosts found on the ground, and sacred objects stolen. Authorities and the parish have filed complaints.
On 15 March, parishioners discovered the church ransacked. The tabernacle had been forced open, consecrated hosts were scattered across the floor, and ciboriums and chalices were taken from the sacristy. Within Catholic belief, the profanation of the Eucharist is regarded as a particularly serious violation of the sacred, typically requiring a Mass of reparation.
This was not the only incident in the region. Similar break-ins occurred in Meroux and Bourguignon, where church doors were forced and liturgical objects stolen. The gendarmerie has recorded the incidents, and both the municipality and the parish have filed formal complaints as investigations continue.
