Date of incident: March 14, 2026

New protective barriers have been installed around the Altar of the Confession in St. Peter’s Basilica following repeated intrusions and acts of vandalism. Several incidents involved individuals damaging sacred objects or committing acts considered sacrilegious.

Following a series of vandalism incidents and unauthorised intrusions, new security measures have been introduced at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. A protective barrier has been installed around the Altar of the Confession to safeguard one of the most sacred areas of the church.

The decision comes after multiple episodes in recent years, including individuals climbing the altar, damaging historic candelabra, and performing acts considered sacrilegious. One of the most serious incidents involved a man who reached the altar and desecrated it in front of visitors, prompting a penitential rite and temporary closure of the basilica for purification. Other cases include protests, public disturbances, and repeated breaches of security.

The Vatican stated that these intrusions offend the sacred nature of the site.
