Gunfire Damages Fresco at Tuscania Sanctuary

Country: Italy

Date of incident: March 13, 2026

Unknown individuals fired shots at the church of the Madonna del Cerro in Tuscania, damaging a fresco of the Madonna and parts of the church’s exterior. The Carabinieri have opened an investigation.

On 13 March, gunshots struck both the interior and exterior of the sanctuary. Bullet impacts were found inside the church, including on a fresco of the Madonna, causing damage to the site’s artistic and religious heritage. Witnesses alerted authorities after discovering evidence of the shooting in the surrounding wooded area.

Investigators are examining several possible motives, including vandalism. Some media reports also mention that a piece of paper with alleged references to Satanism may have been found near the scene; however, this detail has not been officially confirmed. Preliminary findings suggest the shots may have been fired from a revolver, as no shell casings were recovered inside the church.

The Carabinieri of Tuscania continue to investigate.
