Cross Destroyed in Vandalism at Memorial in Szczecin

Country: Poland

Date of incident: March 19, 2026

Unknown perpetrators vandalised a memorial lapidarium in Szczecin, damaging tombstones and a stone cross.

Unknown individuals vandalised the lapidarium located in a park on Chopina Street in Szczecin, Poland. A stone cross at the site was also broken. Additionally, at least two tombstones were damaged, including one that was smashed and another that was struck with a sharp object. The site is a memorial and spiritual place, and the damage has been described as an act of vandalism.

The site is a memorial space built on the grounds of a former cemetery linked to the Kückenmühle care facility. The institution originally served patients, including children and orphans, and later became associated with a complex and tragic history during the Nazi period, when many residents were deported and killed as part of the regime’s euthanasia policies.

The lapidarium was created in 2021 through the efforts of local historians and volunteers to preserve and display surviving gravestones recovered from the area.

Following the latest incident, police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses to help identify those responsible.
