Country: Belgium

Date of incident: March 1, 2026

Approximately 50 graves were targeted in a cemetery in Sombreffe, with crucifixes and religious items stolen. Images indicate that crosses were deliberately broken off graves, affecting objects of religious and commemorative significance.

The incident occurred during the night from 1 to 2 March 2026 at the cemetery of Tongrinne, located in Sombreffe. Unknown perpetrators carried out thefts affecting around fifty graves. The items stolen included crucifixes, statuettes, and bronze elements placed on the graves.

Several crosses were deliberately broken off the graves before being taken, adding to the symbolic impact on the integrity of the burial sites.

The theft of crosses and religious objects from graves affects elements of religious and commemorative significance. Although the mayor stated that there had been no deliberate desecration, he acknowledged that such acts “touch on what is sacred and on memory” and have a strong emotional impact on families.

Jonathan Burtaux confirmed that the municipality filed a complaint shortly after the incidents were reported. Increased police patrols were introduced in coordination with local law enforcement to prevent further offences.
