Statue and Church Vandalised on Palm Sunday Eve
A statue of the Virgin Mary and other church property were vandalised outside a church in Labin. The incident occurred on the eve of Palm Sunday, a significant date in the Christian calendar.
During the night between 28 and 29 March 2026, an act of vandalism took place outside the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Piedalbona, Labin, where a statue of the Virgin Mary located in front of the church was damaged. In addition, a plaque with the Ten Commandments was thrown from a pedestal in the churchyard, and the glass on the church window was smashed.
The incident occurred on the eve of Palm Sunday, a significant date in the Christian calendar.
The Mayor of Labin, Donald Blašković, strongly condemned the act, stating that it represented “not only an attack on a religious symbol, but an attack on the community and peace that we cherish.” He called on authorities to identify those responsible and urged citizens to remain dignified and united.
The local HDZ Labin branch also reacted, describing the act as “an act of disrespect towards religious feelings and our cultural heritage.” Party representative Nenad Boršić emphasized the need to protect shared values and called for unity in response to the incident.
