Puy Sainte Réparade Cemetery Graves Desecrated and Opened

Eleven graves were found defaced and some opened in the cemetery of Puy Sainte Réparade near Aix en Provence. Local authorities condemned the acts as shocking desecration.

On the morning of 30 March 2026, municipal authorities in Le Puy Sainte Réparade were alerted to a partially opened grave in the local Christian cemetery. Upon inspection, municipal police identified a total of eleven graves that had been damaged, with some defaced and others completely opened.

Mayor Jean David Ciot expressed shock at the discovery, stating: “I don’t understand, it’s extremely morbid and horrible.” He further condemned the acts, saying: “Words fail me. It’s so disgusting to go and open graves.” According to the mayor, the incident has deeply affected the local community, impacting “the dignity of the dead and the privacy of the families.”

The gendarmerie has opened an investigation, collecting fingerprints and reviewing surveillance footage to determine whether there was unlawful intrusion and possible theft.
