Country: France

Date of incident: April 25, 2026

The Church of Saint John Paul II in Saint-Louis was burglarised and desecrated, with the tabernacle broken into and the consecrated hosts stolen, prompting strong condemnation from local authorities.

The Catholic Church of Saint John Paul II, located in the Bois de Nèfles Coco district of Saint-Louis, Réunion, was targeted on Friday in what parish officials described as an act of vandalism and desecration. During the incident, the tabernacle was broken into, and the consecrated hosts were taken.

The violation of the tabernacle, considered one of the most sacred elements within a Catholic church, has caused particular shock among the faithful. Mayor Juliana M'Doihoma publicly condemned the act, stating: “This act does not only affect a place of worship, it wounds a community, offends believers, and undermines what we hold most dear: mutual respect and living together.”

She expressed her full support for the parish and residents “deeply shocked by this act”, firmly condemning the “unacceptable actions” and offering encouragement to law enforcement working to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.
