Statue of Mary Desecrated with Red Paint in Zhovkva

In Zhovkva, Lviv region, a statue of the Mary has been desecrated in the city’s central square with red liquid poured over the statue. A man has been identified and arrested.

The incident was reported on 28 April 2026 in Zhovkva, Lviv region. A 33-year-old resident of the city was detained after desecrating a statue of Mary located on Vicheva Square, Zhovkva’s central square, by pouring a red liquid over the figure.

The incident was made public by Ihor Muravskyi, head of the municipal enterprise “Zhovkva City Housing and Utilities Management,” who stated that this was the first time in the city’s history that a shrine of this kind had been desecrated. In a public statement, he wrote: “For the first time in the history of our city of Zhovkva, an act of vandalism was committed against the statue of the Mother of God located on Vicheva Square.” He also called upon the National Police bring those responsible to justice.

Following the incident, the suspect was notified of suspicion of hooliganism.
