Church Bells Deliberately Damaged Leading to Severe Safety Risk
An act of vandalism at the Church of the Resurrection in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany, left church bells deliberately damaged and live power lines cut, creating a potentially life-threatening situation.
On 9 May 2026, unknown individuals carried out a deliberate act of vandalism inside the bell tower of the Church of the Resurrection in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany. The perpetrators sawed halfway through the clappers of two bells and cut two live electrical power lines.
The damage was discovered after the sexton noticed the bells were malfunctioning. A specialist inspection confirmed that, had the bells rung, the damaged clappers could have broken off, potentially causing serious structural damage and endangering people nearby. The severed live cables further increased the risk.
Pastor Theodora Beer described it as a targeted and prepared act, stating: “The perpetrators must have brought tools with them and obviously knew exactly what they were doing.” She added that the community had “never experienced anything like this before.”
A note left behind in the bell chamber suggested prior planning. The church had also recently suffered other incidents, including damage to a railing and the theft of a defibrillator.
