Attempted Arson in Delmenhorst Church Involving Burning of Bibles and Hymn Books

On 13 May 2026, an attempted arson took place at the Church of St. Christophorus in Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony,, where unknown individuals set fire to religious texts inside the building. The incident involved the burning of Bibles, hymnals and Bible passages placed on a table, causing smoke and a fire hazard inside the church.

According to police reports, several religious books and written passages, including Bibles and hymn books, were deliberately collected on a book table inside the Church of St. Christophorus and set alight. The incident occurred on 13 May at around 2:30 p.m.

An organist inside the church noticed smoke developing and immediately alerted emergency services, which prevented the fire from spreading further. The smouldering materials were removed from the building and extinguished before significant structural damage could occur.

The action is being treated as attempted arson. The estimated material damage was around €2,500. Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses.
