An arson attack targeted the Sanctuary of St Michael the Archangel after intruders allegedly set fire to the church's main wooden entrance to gain access. Once inside, they vandalised the sanctuary and stole the crown and sword from the statue of St Michael.

The Sanctuary of St Michael the Archangel at Pizzo San Michele, one of Campania's most important pilgrimage sites, was targeted in an arson attack followed by theft and vandalism.

According to initial reports, unknown perpetrators allegedly set fire to the sanctuary's main wooden entrance door in order to force their way into the church. After entering the building, they stole the crown and sword from the statue of St Michael the Archangel, key religious symbols associated with the shrine. The intruders also searched adjacent rooms and reportedly stole an electric piano.

The discovery sparked shock and anger among faithful from the nearby communities of Solofra, Calvanico and Montoro, where devotion to St Michael is deeply rooted. Parish representatives, volunteers and local residents quickly mobilised to secure the sanctuary and prevent further damage.

The Municipality reacted to the "act of vandalism to which the entire community and the authorities have responded by condemning it in the strongest terms and placing their trust in the investigators."

Police and Carabinieri officers launched an investigation.
