A priest was held captive for around 90 minutes after three assailants broke into a church and parish house in Cantanhede, Portugal. The attackers threatened the priest, demanded money and valuables, and stole a laptop before fleeing.

A Catholic priest was held captive for approximately an hour and a half after three robbers broke into a church and parish house in Cantanhede, Portugal, on the morning of 27 May 2026.

According to police reports, the assailants entered the church complex at around 8:30 a.m. while the priest was in the sacristy. The attackers allegedly threatened him, demanded money and valuables, and attempted to assault him during the incident. The priest was held against his will for around 90 minutes before the suspects fled the scene.

The perpetrators reportedly stole a laptop computer before escaping. Despite the ordeal, the priest was released without serious physical injuries.

Police have opened an investigation into the incident, which is being treated as a case of kidnapping, robbery and attempted assault.
