Christian coat of arms at former convent burned in an act of vandalism
On 13 June 2026, the coat of arms of the Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de la Esperanza y el Trabajo y Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia was found burned on the iron gate of the former Convent of Las Claras in Alcalá de Henares. The damage was limited to the coat of arms, yet the incident prompted a police complaint and caused unease among members of the Confraternity and local residents.
On 13 June 2026, members of the Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de la Esperanza y el Trabajo y Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia discovered that the coat of arms of the Confraternity had been burned on the iron gate entrance of the former Convent of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, commonly known as Las Claras, in the historic centre of Alcalá de Henares. The members of the Confraternity discovered it when they went to the convent for a rehearsal.
The vandalism caused damage to the coat of arms which is linked to the identity of the confraternity. According to the reports, the fire destroyed their identifying coat of arms, linked to the identity of the Confraterntity, which had been installed on the gate of the former church. The fire did not spread beyond the coat of arms, but representatives of the confraternity noted that the consequences could have been more serious had the fire reached wooden structures within the convent complex.
The damaged gate forms part of the historic heritage of the former Convent of Las Claras. According to the report, the Confraternity filed a complaint with the police following the incident and requested an intervention by heritage authorities since the damage affected a protected historical environment.
This act of vandalism generated concern among members of the Confraternity, worshippers, and local residents. According to the report, several confraternities publicly expressed their condemnation of the act through statements on social media.
