Church of Sts Peter and Paul Vandalised and Tabernacle desecrated
On the night of 5 to 6 July, unknown perpetrators entered Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul Church in the Wazemmes district of Lille and committed vandalism and sacrilegious theft. According to reports, the tabernacle, containing consecrated hosts, was stolen along with the sacred contents. Further, a cross and several religious objects were damaged and the interior of the church was also found to be vandalised. This act was lamented by the diocese as an offence against the sacred, the faithful and priests of the community.
On the night of 5 to 6 July 2026, unknown perpetrators broke into the Church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul Church in the Wazemmes district of Lille and committed vandalism and sacrilegious theft. According to reports, the perpetrators stole the tabernacle containing a ciborium of consecrated hosts. Furthermore, several religious objects were also stolen, including relics a crucifix from the central aisle, and an ostensory. There was further vandalism done to the interior of the church which was left with extensive damage.
The theft of consecrated hosts gives the incident religious significance beyond the scope of financial gain, as the tabernacle is the place where the Eucharist is reserved. The perpetrators also damaged a religious symbol and church interior.
The Vicar General of the Diocese of Lille filed a complaint on 6 July writing that he "condemned with the greatest firmness this anti-religious act", which "particularly affects the faithful and priests." This is the second time in eighteen months that the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul has been the target of criminal activity. It was the victim of a theft in February 2025 (OIDAC, reported). Despite the damage, the church will remain open to the faithful.
According to reports, although the extent of the damage has not been reported, precautionary measures are now being taken to prevent such a desecration from occurring again. An ongoing investigation is working to identify the culprits.
