Man arrested after a spate of vandalism forces Cornwall churches to close

Reported on 13 July 2026, a man has been charged with alleged offences related to incidents of vandalism and theft between 8 and 9 July 2026 at two churches in Mevagissey, Cornwall. According to police, on 11 July a 46-year-old man from Mevagissey was arrested and has been charged with damage to the churches.
At St Peter's Church, damage was caused to the interior of the building, including a historic prayer desk and other furnishings. Following the incident, the church has had to temporarily close its doors, ending an open-door practice that had been maintained for more than 30 years. The churches of Sts Just and Goran have also closed for security reasons. Community representatives described the vandalism as "appalling" and church representatives said they were saddened that the actions of one individual deprived the residents and visitors from a place of worship.
