Repeated Sacrilegious Thefts Prompt Concern of Bishop
During the night of 13 to 14 July 2026, a sacrilegious theft occurred at the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Porto Sant'Elpidio, when a tabernacle was stolen which contained the ciborium of consecrated hosts. The theft of the Eucharist constitutes a profanation that affected the local Christian community and marked the second incident of this kind in the Archdiocese of Fermo in two weeks.
An incident of sacrilegious theft and desecration occurred during the night of 13–14 July 2026 at the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Porto Sant'Elpidio. According to the reports, unknown perpetrators entered the church in the early morning hours, removed the tabernacle, and stole the ciborium containing the consecrated hosts. The theft was discovered when the church was opened later that morning. The stolen liturgical objects had limited economic value, while the removal of the consecrated hosts represented an offence that goes beyond financial gain.
The profanation had a significant impact on the local Christian community. The reports describe the incident as another profanation involving the Eucharist and note that it followed a similar sacrilegious theft at the Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Fermo on 1 July, where the tabernacle was violated and consecrated hosts were also stolen (OIDAC, reported). In a later report, the Archbishop of Fermo, Monsignor Rocco Pennacchio, stated his concern that the theft of consecrated hosts at both Sacred Heart Churches in the Archdiocese could indicate their being put to use for "black masses" or to put them "on the market" for sacrilegious rituals, since they do not have financial value as such.
The archbishop's office wrote, "The vulnerability of Christ's heart is the same vulnerability as that of our places of worship, which are unfortunately exposed to theft, assaults, or violence that often also involve our parish priests and their collaborators." On 14 July, the Vicar General of the Archdiocese celebrated a Mass of reparation in response to the sacrilegious offence.
The carabinieri had not identified any suspects at the time of reporting. While the repeated targeting of tabernacles and consecrated hosts may indicate that the Eucharist, rather than the monetary value of the stolen objects, was the primary target, the exact motive behind the incident has not yet been identified.
