Statue of the Mary removed from local shrine
On the night of 18 to 19 July 2026, unknown perpetrators vandalised a roadside shrine attached to the historic Józef Oak tree near Brzyno by smashing the glass and stealing the statue of the Virgin Mary. The attack damaged a place of Christian piety that had long been an important symbol of religious devotion for the local community.
On the night of 18 to 19 July, unknown perpetrators vandalised a roadside shrine attached to the Józef Oak tree on the border between Brzyno and Wierzchucino in Krokowa. After the perpetrators smashed the glass of the shrine, they removed the statue of the Virgin Mary.
According to reports, for many years the shrine had formed a significant part of the religious devotion in the local community.
Brzyno spokespersons report that the incident was particularly painful to the community regarding its history. The chapel was named after the late religious Canon Józef Cisowski, who served the community for 23 years. The village council announced that it "make every effort to restore the chapel."
