Student in Hamm arrested for planning ISIS-inspired arson attack on Christian church
Reports published in July 2026 revealed that a 16-year-old from Hamm had been arrested in April on suspicion of planning an arson attack on an independent Christian church on behalf of the so-called Islamic State. According to the prosecution, the teenager had scouted the church as a target but was arrested before he could carry out the attack. The reported targeting of a Christian place of worship indicates a planned religiously motivated terrorist attack.
On 21 July 2026, media reports revealed details of the case of a 16-year-old student from Hamm who had been arrested in April 2026 on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack against an independent Christian congregation in the city. According to the prosecutor's office, the investigation concerns the teenager's supporting a terrorist organisation, "We are investigating the suspect, among other things, for supporting a terrorist organisation", says a spokeswoman. Prosecutors reportedly stated that there is an urgent suspicion that the teenager acted on behalf of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS).
Investigators reported that the suspect underwent "Islamic radicalisation" in 2023 and had allegedly established contact with a person affiliated with ISIS and was eventually persuaded to carry out an attack in Germany. According to media reports cited by the prosecution, he selected an independent Christian church in Hamm as the target of a planned arson attack and conducted reconnaissance of the building in preparation.
The planned attack was prevented after police received a tip-off and arrested the suspect before the attack could be carried out. As a result, no injuries were reported and no damage was caused to the church. Prosecutors are also investigating whether an unsuccessful attempt to set fire to a hunting blind in March 2026 was connected to preparations for the planned church attack.
The president of the targeted congregation described the foiled attack as "terrible" and expressed gratitude that authorities had intervened in time, adding that, apart from a broken window several years earlier, the congregation had not previously experienced any security incidents.
Following his arrest, a judge ordered the teenager's placement in a juvenile forensic psychiatric facility pending a psychiatric evaluation. The investigation remains ongoing.
