Church in Abenheim vandalised and holy water font desecrated
On 19 July 2026, St Boniface Catholic Church in Abenheim was found to be vandalised by unknown perpetrators who urinated in the holy water font and damaged church furnishings. The vandalism resulted in the temporary closure of the church. According to parish representatives, the incident points to a wider problem of church vandalism in the area and increasing challenges to keep churches open.
The incident was discovered on 19 July 2026 when a woman entered St Boniface Catholic Church in Abenheim, intending to light a candle. She found that unknown perpetrators had urinated in the holy water, forcibly damaged the pews, scratched wooden benches, and damaged the door of the confessional.
According to reports, the parish described the damage as an act of vandalism and a desecration by the urination in the holy water font. Beyond the material damage to the church interior, the incident resulted in the place of worship being closed until further notice, keeping visitors and local attendants from prayer. A spokeswoman called the incident an act of "blind, furious vandalism" which "does not even stop at a house of worship."
Furthermore, according to a report from another local parish "this is not an isolated incident" and other churches have also been affected by vandalism. The frequency of these incidents makes it "more and more difficult" to keep churches open for the local community, the report states.
