Third Church Targeted This Week: Tabernacle Desecrated and Excrement Left Inside Saint-Symphonien
On the night of 26 to 27 July 2026, the church of Saint-Symphorien in Chambray-lès-Tours was left desecrated and vandalised, the third church in the Indre-et-Loire region to be targeted this week. Unknown perpetrators entered the church, opened the tabernacle and threw consecrated hosts from the ciborium on the floor along and left excrement inside the church, the Diocese of Tours stated.
On the night of 26 to 27 July 2026, the church of Saint-Symphorien in Chambray-lès-Tours was left desecrated and vandalised with consecrated hosts thrown on the floor and excrement left near the entrance. Saint-Symphorien is the third church in the Indre-et-Loire region to be targeted in less than a week, with the churches of Sainte Geneviève and Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc falling victim to thefts.
In Saint-Symphonien, the tabernacle was opened and consecrated hosts were scattered on the floor, but nothing was stolen. This act of desecration is deeply disturbing to the Catholic faithful, who consider the Eucharist to be the most sacred object in the Church. According to the reports, during the search, excrement was also found on the floor inside the church.
A complaint has been filed by the Diocese of Tours and at the time of reporting, no arrests had been made.
