Tabernacles desecrated and painting slashed at Saint-Pierre Church in Nevers
On 25 July 2026, Saint-Pierre Church in Nevers was found to be vandalised with intruders having damaged the tabernacles and slashed the paintings inside the historic church. The perpetrators not only caused extensive damage to the furnishings of the house of worship, but committed a serious act of desecration which deeply affected the Christian community. The reports also describe the increasing frequency of acts of vandalism affecting churches in France.
On 25 July 2026, volunteers entering the Catholic Church of Saint-Pierre discovered its interior had been profanely vandalised. According to the reports, the damage affected several parts of the Church, most notably, several tabernacles had been damaged and a painting had been slashed. A complaint was filed immediately after the discovery.
The damage to the tabernacles, which are used to house the Blessed Sacramnets, affected objects with particular religious significance to Catholics.
According to the report, the discovery of the vandalism in the place of such historical and religious significance has caused a "great deal of emotion" in the community. Further, these acts of vandalism add to a series of incidents targeting places of worship in France in recent years, the report states.
