Religious icons broken and sanctuary vandalised at chapel in Saronikos
The Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Saronikos was vandalised on 7 August 2026, one day after the local celebration of the Feast of the Transfiguration. Unknown perpetrators damaged the chapel's interior and exterior, including breaking religious icons in front of the altar and damaging the sanctuary.
On 7 August 2026, unknown individuals entered the Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Saronikos, and caused extensive vandalism and damage to the place of worship. Chairs were overturned, plants decorating the Chapel were damaged, and objects were scattered throughout the building. Further, religious icons in front of the Holy Altar were desecrated and broken, and the sanctuary was also damaged. The incident occurred one day after the local community celebrated the Feast of the Transfiguration.
The reports state that the damage to religious icons and the sanctuary was condemned by the municipality of Saronikos, with a spokesperson stating: "there are no words for the disrespect and pettiness" and that the Chapel was a place of "faith, memory and particular significance for our local community." The municipality said it was in contact with the competent authorities to investigate the incident and identify those responsible and announced that restoration work would begin immediately.
