Concerns Over Security of Churches in Umbria
Repeated incidents of vandalism and profanation at sacred sites in Umbria were detailed in a report from 13 August 2026. The incidents caused damage to religious objects and, in one case, even prevented the celebration of Sunday Mass. Concerns have been raised that churches may have to restrict access or install locks, potentially affecting their availability for worship and prayer.
A report from 13 August 2026 recorded incidents of vandalism and desecration which have occurred in the region of Umbria in recent years. The incidents have shown the fragility of the places of worship, and raise questions as to whether access will have to be restricted.
The report records incidents from 2016 until 2025 which include numerous cases of vandalism, damage to religious symbols (OIDAC, reported), and sacrilegious theft.
Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, speaking in relation to security measures at St. Peter’s Basilica following vandalism there, said churches "must retain a sense of freedom; they cannot be militarised." Nevertheless, the churches in Umbria are now faced with a multitude of violent incidents that raise concerning questions about the security of the places of worship. While churches ought to maintain a generous attitude, the report suggests that sacred sites also need to take into account security concerns which may limit church access.
