Radical Left Group Attack Christian Pro-Life Prayer in Göttingen
On 15 August 2026, around 200 counter-protesters attacked a peaceful prayer gathering of approximately 20 young Christians opposing abortion. Police prevented the violent protesters, reportedly from the far-left, from reaching the participants, but twelve officers were injured during the intervention. The Christian participants were subsequently escorted from the area under police protection.
A counter-protest escalated on 15 August 2026 in Göttingen after around 20 young volunteers from the "SOS Life" campaign and the "Sacred Heart Apostolate" had gathered for the announced "Public Rosary Prayer Against Abortion." According to police, the gathering, which also involed speeeches and drums, was peaceful until a counter-protest of about 200 people developed, and tensions increased after the prayer gathering ended. Counter-protesters attempted to violently break through a police line separating the groups, prompting police to intervene by securing entrances, exits, and stairwells so the gathering Christians could retreat.
The Christian Forum described the counter-protesters as "left-wing extremists," whose disturbance caused participants to remain "shaken by the irrational hatred" of so-called "radicals" after the incident and required police protection to leave the area. Among responding officers, twelve policemen reportedly suffered injuries from irritant spray and that several ambulances were deployed.
