Church Cross Damaged and Bible Stolen in Bayreuth
On 13 August 2026, an unknown perpetrator damaged a cross and stole a Bible from the Evangelical-Lutheran Christuskirche in Bayreuth. The cross was forcibly removed and severely bent, while the Bible attached to it was taken. Police have opened an investigation into the offence, which is not the first to affect the Bayreuth churches.
On 13 August 2026, an unknown perpetrator caused damage to a cross and stole a Bible at the Evangelical-Lutheran Christuskirche in Bayreuth. The altar cross was moved from its original location and was found severely bent, causing approximately €500 in damage. Further, the Bible attached to the cross was also stolen.
The incident occurred shortly after another incident affecting a church in Bayreuth. In July 2026, unknown perpetrators sprayed two upside-down crosses on the entrance pillars of the Catholic Schlosskirche. Police also estimated the damage at around €500.
The Bayreuth police took over the investigation because of the religious nature of the offence and appealed for witnesses.
