Parish of San Nicolás demands action after ongoing acts of vandalism
On 27 August, the Parish of San Nicolás de Bari y San Pedro Mártir, known as the Sistine Chapel in Valencia, raised concerns over repeated vandalism and deterioration affecting the property and surroundings of the historic church, including human and animal waste littered on its walls.
As reported on 29 August, the incidents concern the Sistine Chapel of Valencia, the Parish of San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir, a historic monument which has been besieged by vandals. The parish reported recurring graffiti and vandalism, including human and animal waste littered on its walls. The reported offences include vandalism and defacement of the surroundings of a Christian place of worship which have been ongoing for several months.
San Nicolás is a listed Building of Cultural Interest (BIC) and one of Valencia's most visited monuments. Due to its value, the parish has expressed great concern over the church's security, and expressed indignation at the ongoing deterioration of the cultural and religious heritage site.
The parish had submitted a formal complaint on 2 July 2026, but reported ongoing property damage in August.
The parish has called for increased surveillance, and has expressed its discontent, "demanding effective action to address the deterioration," the report states. It has also stated its willingness to continue working with the municipal authorities to protect the historic site.
