Catholic Sanctuary vandalised with satanic graffiti and destroyed statue
In August, the rural St. Helena Sanctuary in Siniscola was profanely vandalised with satanic graffiti, and a statue of Saint Helena smashed, along with various other furnishings damaged. The incident constituted a sacrilegious insult to a historic place of worship which served for generations as the centre of local communal devotion.
According to a report from 27 August, several days prior, the Sanctuary of St. Helena in Siniscola was targeted for sacrilegious vandalism, where walls and furnishings were graffitied with Satanic, and profane writings. Further, while the church was ransacked, a statue of Saint Helena was found broken into pieces, church furnishings were overturned and damaged.
Residents in the community were reportedly shocked by the serious sacrilege, "especially given the ferocity with which the vandals acted, looting and severely damaging the rural sanctuary." Whilst not in current use, the sanctuary, had been the historical centre of celebrations which had attracted the faithful for generations. It had, in 2021, been listed by the Superintendence of Fine Arts as a site worthy of protection.
The combination of explicitly Satanic graffiti and the destruction of a statue of a saint inside a sanctuary is a strong indicator of deliberate hostility towards the Christian character of the site. An investigation into the incident was opened.
