Arsonist Destroys Historic Crucifix in Lucka
A historic crucifix was set on fire with the figure of Jesus being completely destroyed in a Lutheran church in Lucka. Many parts of church furnishings were severely damaged, in particular around the sanctuary and including the altar, which was defaced with swastikas and other symbols. The person suspected of setting the fire was identified quickly after the crime occurred and an investigation into the crime is ongoing.
On 11 September, a deliberate arson in the Church of St. Pankratius in Lucka almost completely destroyed a listed crucifix dating back to 1649. The incident caused damage to many church furnishings, including the altar, which was defaced with swastika and other symbols, and floor around the sanctuary, which is covered in soot. The fire has caused the church to be closed until repairs to the furnishings and sanctuary can be completed.
According to the report, surrounding neighbours noticed the flames and prevented it from spreading further, alerting the fire department. The full extent of the damage is not yet known, and the parish is awaiting the results from the investigation. A suspect was quickly apprehended following the incident.
For the parish, the crucifix possessed not only high spiritual and symbolic value, but also significant historical importance. The fire has caused a loss to a valuable testament of the community history.
