German Newspaper: Orlando Shooter Could Just as Well Have Been Christian

Country: Germany

Date of incident: June 16, 2016

German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung a published commentary on the Orlando shooting in which it said the crime had nothing to do with Islam and everything to do with “homophobia” and that the shooter could just as well have been an Evangelical Christian.

A 29-year old Muslim American killed 49 people and injured more at the gay club “Pulse” in Orlando, Florida. Süddeutsche Zeitung published a commentary on the shooting essentially saying this shooting was not an attack on the public but an attack on a specific lifestyle, on a specific group of people, the LGBT. Although the gunman declared loyalty to IS, the newspaper suggested the act was committed by a deranged, hateful, homophobic man, and therefore it “could have just as well been done by an Evangelical Christian.”

Evangelicals have criticized the paper, noting that there is no evidence that an Evangelical Christian has killed a homosexual out of religious motives. Evangelical communities and networks have called for a retraction and apology.
