The Local Police Hate Crime Unit in Palma Investigate Multiple Acts of Vandalism against Churches
The Local Police Hate Crime Unit in Palma is investigating various acts of vandalism committed in recent months against several churches in the Balearic capital.
According to a March 9, 2017 report, these attacks include anti-clerical graffiti, placement of offensive stickers, and the interruption of a Mass by several young people.
One of the most serious events to date occurred on November 22, 2016 in the 14th century parish of Santa Creu, one of the oldest in Palma. Two people threw red paint at night against the facade and against one of the entrances of the temple, which were visibly stained. Read more here.
Since then, the local police have been investigating offensive graffiti sprayed next to the church of Santa Magdalena and on the walls of the neighboring Convent de las Jerónimas. Messages included: "Less rosaries in our ovaries" (in Spanish: “Menos rosarios en nuestros ovaries”) and a drawing of a cross in flames.
At the church in Sant Sebastià, another painting was found, with the slogan "Our body is ours and we do what we want" (in Spanish: “Nuestro cuerpo es nuestro y hacemos lo que queremos”). Also found were offensive stickers, which have also been placed on the access doors of other churches, such as Our Lady of Socorro.
Two months earlier, a group of young people broke into the church of Santa Magdalena during the celebration of a Mass, chanting anti-clerical slogans. This forced the priest to interrupt the homily.
