Political Party Tried to Boycott Inauguration of Virgin Mary Monument

Party members of Podemos failed to prevent the inauguration of a monument dedicated to the Virgen del Rocío when they were denied authorization to hold a second protest march.
In the Cádiz city of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, every effort was made to prevent the inauguration of a monument representing the most venerated popular tradition in the area towards the Virgen del Rocío.
The creation of the sculpture, which measures 8m in height and weighs 5 tons, had been commissioned to the artist Pepe Lanza and was entirely financed by private contributions thanks to the popular initiative promoted by the Pro Monumento Commission "Sentir rociero".
After its location was approved in 2015 in the Plenary Session of the City Council, members of IU (Izquierda Unida) and Podemos gathered 2,000 signatures along with other secularist groups and organized a demonstration in which only 500 people participated to prevent the monument from being located in the Glorieta del Palmar, near one of the entrances to the city.
The Pro Monumento Commission, backed by more than 10,000 signatures, suggested placing the image in a more sheltered location near the Maritime Club, in tribute to all those who embark to go and venerate this image.
Before its inauguration on Saturday, July 15, members of Podemos threatened to attempt to boycott the opening ceremony with another protest, which did not meet the mandatory authorization.
