Aggression and Threats againt Members of Association with Christian Values

Country: Spain

Date of incident: May 3, 2018

Pedro Mejías, delegate of HazteOír in Cádiz, an association of Christian values for the defense of the rights of the family and of life, was the victim of a violent attack on May 3rd at a bar in Cádiz before a public event.

A public reading by the writer and teacher Alicia Rubio and HazteOir.org spokesperson Teresa García-Noblejas of the Madrid Declaration for Understanding, Repect and Freedom (Declaración de Madrid por la Comprensión, el Respeto y la Libertad) was scheduled to be held next to the monument to the Spanish Constitution of 1812 in San Fernando (Cádiz).

Just before the event, a group of people dressed in black came up behind Pedro Mejías, the delegate of Hazte Oír (Cádiz), Alicia Rubio, Teresa García-Noblejas, and other colleagues of the organization as they were leaving a bar. The group began to insult and threaten the members of the organization. Pedro Mejías was called a "fag" and the women were called "sows." At one point, one of the assailants took the blackboard menu of the door of the establishment and broke it on the head of the provincial delegate of the association.

The HazteOír.org initiative had been receiving negative comments for days before the event by Podemos Cádiz, Izquierda Unida and Ganemos Cádiz on social networks. In addition, a counter-demonstration had been organized by the PSOE, UGT and feminist collectives and LGTBI, half an hour before and in the same place where the manifesto was to be read by the association.

After the assault, the event was cancelled and Pedro Mejías went to the hospital to receive care. He then filed a police complaint about the incident.

The National Police confirmed the progress of an investigation to determine the identity of the alleged perpetrators, while the association will file a complaint about assaults and others for insults.
