Attack Against St.Anton Church in Vienna

Country: Austria

Date of incident: October 29, 2020

In Vienna, about 30 to 50 young people with a Turkish background entered the church St. Anton on the evening of October 28th. The group rioted and kicked against benches and the confessional while shouting Islamist slogans like "Allahu Akbar". A surveillance camera recorded the scene. Two weeks prior to this incident the church and its surroundings started to be molested by the group. It is belived that the incidnet is connected to the re-publishing of the caricatures of the prophet Mohammed in France.  The police is investigating and surveilling the area.

"The whole thing is a serious matter: believers have the right to practice their religion undisturbed. This right is one of the pillars of peaceful coexistence and must be protected - especially in Vienna, where religious peace is exemplary," - Words by the Diocesan spokesman Michael Prüller to Kathpress.

The Minister of the Interior Karl Nehammer also commented on the incident: "We will never allow the right to freely practice religion to be destroyed in Austria and will protect the Christian community with all our strength."

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz also condemns the attack stating on Twitter: "All Christians must be able to practice their faith freely and in safety in #Austria! We will resolutely continue the fight against political Islam and show no false tolerance in this respect.

Thanks to all police officers for their commitment!"
