Arson at Catholic Church in Schriesheim

Country: Germany

Date of incident: March 11, 2024

Unknown perpetrators set fire to the altar and other items in the Catholic church in Schriesheim. A woman entering the church noticed the smoke and immediately alerted the fire brigade. Commander Oliver Scherer described the church as completely smoky inside, with a visible glow in the altar area. Police are investigating arson.

The pollutant-laden soot has severely damaged all wall surfaces, windows, furniture, lighting and flooring. The organ is currently unplayable due to the soot and requires extensive cleaning.

The project will take at least four weeks to complete and will cost approximately €150,000. The church will be closed to visitors during this time.
