Saint-Louis Roi Church severely vandalised

Country: France

Date of incident: January 10, 2023

On January 10, the church of Saint-Louis Roi in Champagne-au-Mont-d'Or, near Lyon, has been severely vandalised. Candles, books and vases have been thrown on the ground. Two large crucifixes were destroyed. The stained glass windows of the choir, a nativity scene and the Way of the cross were also damaged by the vandals.

The parish priest, Father Charcosset, commented: "The objects present in the church - candles, books, vases, etc. - were thrown to the ground. The crib installed in front of the altar was turned over and damaged. The Way of the Cross and the choir paintings are essentially destroyed, as are two big crucifixes. Three of the large stained glass windows in the choir were significantly damaged."

A mass of reparation has to be held due to the desacration. Fr. Charcoset explained the reason: "Without prejudice to the intentions of their author, these acts, because of their violence and their target, constitute what the Church calls desecration: the will to attack the holiness of the place."

A man suspected of having perpetrated the damage was arrested and placed in police custody.
