Arson Attack on Salamanca Chapel

On Sunday 22nd April, someone tried to set fire to the chapel of the Santísima Vera Cruz. The arsonists used a can of petrol. The parish priest was injured trying to put out the fire.
The fire was discovered by students passing by the chapel of the Santísima Vera Cruz. When they saw flames coming from the building, they immediately alerted the chaplain, Genaro Zaballos, whose house was attached to the same building. The fire also caused part of the church to be filled with smoke. The chaplain and the young people, together with the firefighters who arrived a short time later, managed to extinguish the flames. However, Father Zaballos suffered some burns.
Fortunately, the fire was confined to the gates. According to El Adelanto, those who tried to set fire to the chapel "emptied a can of petrol into the crack in the street door and set fire to it". A section of Salamanca society, upon hearing the news early on Sunday, paraded through Vera Cruz to show their "bitter and vigorous protest against those responsible for the fire".
