Tablecloth on the altar of Saint-Symphorien Church

On October 24, the tablecloth on the altar of the Saint-Symphorien Church of Loué, Sarthe, was set on fire. As the alert was given very quickly the local priests were able to extinguish the fire and prevent further damages. Local authorities, however, expressed concern about the symbolism of this incident.
"There was no major disaster, but the symbolism is serious if it is an attempt to burn the church," says Anthony Mussard, mayor of the municipality.
The fire was discovered by a teenager who also saw a man dressed in black and wearing a hood coming out of the church. She then alerted the priests.
The police have started an investigation.
