Vandals repeatedly target Church of Gesù Liberatore
In May 2024, repeated acts of vandalism led to the temporary closure of the oratory at the parish of Gesù Liberatore in Canosa di Puglia (Apulia region). The latest incident involved the deliberate damage of a reinforced plastic cover used to protect the outdoor stage that hosts most parish and summer youth activities.
Father Michele Pace, the parish priest, expressed deep regret over the decision to suspend activities, stating that the emotional toll of seeing the educators' and children’s efforts undermined was greater than the material damage. “The tear in the cover felt like a slap in the face to every educator, every child and young person involved in the parish,” he said.
This is not the first such incident. The parish has previously experienced damage to doors and furnishings, and in two cases, the church restrooms were found intentionally flooded.
