Priest stabbed on the street in Ireland

Country: Ireland

Date of incident: August 16, 2024

On August 16, in the morning an attacker brutally stabbed Fr. Paul Murphy from Waterford on his way to the Defence Force barracks in Galway, where he works as an army chaplain. Soldiers from the barracks had to open fire on the attacker. The priest is now in a serious condition.

UPDATE: The priest was stabbed multiple times outside an army barracks by a 16-year-old attacker inspired by ISIS ideology. CCTV footage showed Father Murphy driving his jeep through the gates of the barracks after the teenager began stabbing him with a hunting knife. The boy clung to the side of the vehicle and continued to stab the priest as the car moved, in a vicious attack that nearly cost the chaplain his hand and left him months in hospital recovering from his injuries.

The Central Criminal Court in Dublin heard that the boy had supported the Islamic State (IS) and had been radicalised online. The judge said he would sentence the boy on 29 April.
