Country: Italy

Date of incident: August 17, 2024

On the night from August 16 to 17, unknown persons destroyed a statue of Mary and other sacred objects in a chapel of a retirement home in Montecilfone.

The parish priest found the devastation in the church in Montecilfone on August 17. A statue of Mary was found on the ground in a thousand pieces. Some other items such as chairs, candles and sacred objects for mass were also found destroyed on the floor. Besides, money was stolen from the offerings.

Commenting on the incident, the parish priest said that the church cannot stand by and do nothing. "From the pulpit and in my sermons, I have always called on the community to denounce and prevent all forms of violence, theft and vandalism. The church has often been the target of theft.... So many incidents, too many, are now being repeated in the village, actions that darken the face of Montecilfone."

This incident caused anger, dissatisfaction and indignation in the entire parish. The police are investigating the case.
