Arson Suspected Delmenhorst Church: Confessional on Fire
On 25 July 2024, a fire was discovered inside the Church of All Saints in Delmenhorst, which the parish priest suspects to be a deliberate act of arson. The fire caused damage in the confessional and forced the temporary closure of the church.
A couple entering the church noticed an unusual smell and saw smoke filling the side chapel. Upon investigation, they found the confessional ablaze and promptly extinguished the fire. The parish secretary and priest alerted the authorities. Although the fire brigade confirmed the flames had been put out, the church had to be ventilated due to smoke damage and closed for cleaning.
Pastor Wachtel said he saw no plausible explanation other than arson. He also reported further acts of vandalism, including a broken cross that had been rammed into the wooden panelling inside the church.
