Two churches in Gravelines vandalised

Country: France

Date of incident: September 25, 2024

Two churches in Gravelines, near Dunkirk, were vandalised on 25 September. Sacred objects from the shattered tabernacle were found scattered on the ground.

Father Husson noticed that the door to the choir of Saint Willibrord's Church in the city centre was open. The tabernacle had been fractured from behind, the wooden plate had been smashed and the sacred objects it contained had been scattered on the ground.

Similar damage was observed at the Huttes church, albeit to a lesser extent. According to the abbot, who filed a complaint, no objects were stolen.

He believes that this desecration is above all a big shock for the Christian community in Dunkirk: 'The Christian community is shaken. They have touched the choir of the church, the most sacred part,' he explains.
