Church in Neunkirchen devestated

Country: Germany

Date of incident: September 26, 2024

As reported on September 26, the protestant church in Neunkirchen has been devastated. Vandals tore up hymn books and destroyed the altar Bible and other property. This is the second incident at the Protestant Johanneskirche in Neunkirchen.

"Some hymnals were torn up and thrown from the gallery to the floor, the altar bible was destroyed, sweets were on the floor and the organ bench was scribbled on with a pen."  describes Anja Jacobi, a Protestant pastor. The deliberate damage to the property was a clear indication that the perpetrators intended to cause harm.

A milder incident occurred two weeks ago, when the place was just a mess and things were thrown around. This time, however, the damage went much farther than that. Of particular concern to the congregation is the loss of an organ key. "It is really a shame that the organ key is missing. We had a concert in the church that night."

Other Protestant parishes in the Westerwald deanery have had similar experiences. Stones were thrown at church windows in Hachenburg Castle and Ransbach-Baumbach. In Neuhäusel and Nordhofen there were also break-ins with the aim of stealing money.

Parish priest Anja Jacobi said the church would remain closed except for events. The Neunkirchen parish has filed a complaint against unknown persons.
