Crosses broken at Besançon cemetery

Eight graves have been vandalised in the military section of the Saint Claude cemetery in Besançon, Doubs. Headstones and crosses were broken. The damage was reported on 6 September.

Eight soldiers' graves were vandalised, with crosses and headstones broken, in various places around the site. 

Members of the Souvenir Français, who maintain the graves, noticed the damage. The Prefect of the Doubs, Jean-François Colombet, expressed ‘his indignation at the damage to the graves of soldiers who fell for France and firmly condemns this despicable act of vandalism’. For her part, the EELV mayor of Besançon, Anne Vignot, also condemned these acts ‘in the strongest terms’ and offered her support to the veterans‘ associations’.
