Church vandalised twice in one month

Country: Germany

Date of incident: September 1, 2023

Following an attempted burglary in September in which the entrance gate was damaged, the altarpiece of the Protestant Church of the Redeemer in Fürstenfeldbruck in Bavaria, southern Germany, has now been vandalised.

An unknown person climbed onto the altar and scratched crosses on the legs of the statues, including statues of Mary, Jesus and St John the Baptist. A restorer will have to visit the church to assess the damage and estimate the cost of restoration. Until then, the church will remain closed outside worship hours.

‘He probably first climbed onto the altar and then carved his crosses into Jesus' legs with an outstretched arm. That's almost artistic given the height,’ said Markus Ambrosy.
