Second Church Desecration in Castellón in one month

Country: Spain

Date of incident: February 20, 2023

On 20 February, a serious desecration took place in the parish church of Santa María de Segorbe. The perpetrators desecrated the tabernacle and also stole money from the church.

‘In the course of a robbery, perpetrated during the night, several objects have been stolen, and, what is more serious, the tabernacle has been opened and the consecrated hosts, deposited in the ciborium and in the viril of the monstrance, have been spilled’, reads the bishop's communiqué. Casimiro López regrets that ‘in less than a month we have to lament a new profanation of the Eucharist in our Diocese. The previous one took place on 24 January in the parish church of San Francisco de Asís in Castellón de la Plana. I ask the whole diocesan community and especially the parish priests and other rectors of churches to take extreme security measures to prevent theft and, above all, desecration of the Blessed Sacrament’.
