Repeated vandalism and desecration in Lot churches

Country: France

Date of incident: October 13, 2024

In the Lot region, three churches have been vandalised in recent weeks. The most recent incident occurred at the Saint-Pierre church in Bagnac-sur-Célé on 13 October, when it was seriously desecrated. The Blessed Sacrament was stolen. A statue inside the church was also deliberately overturned.

Similar cases had already been noted and reported in the previous weeks: one in the parish of Faycelles and the other in the parish of Reyrevignes, both in the same diocese.

Bagnac town hall has filed a complaint. Bishop Laurent Camiade of Cahors says he is very saddened by this situation. 'Our parishioners are deeply upset by these repeated acts of vandalism and robbery; we feel helpless.'

Most of these acts appear to be motivated primarily by the search for precious metals. The head of the heritage inventory in the Department of Parcelle estimated the damage at €15,000.
